Red Wolf

critically endangered red wolf
This is the most critically endangered animal I have ever photographed, including the mountain gorilla. To give you some perspective, there are about 1,000 mountain gorillas remaining in the wild (1,063 at last estimate.) There are only about 20 red wolves left in the wild. Twenty!!

The leading cause of death for red wolves is gunshot. Vehicle strikes are also a serious threat.
If we’re going to save them, more people need to become aware of their perilous existence. Please share and educate those around you. Slow down and watch for wildlife when you drive. Vote for politicians who work to preserve wildlife and habitat. Stop shooting coyotes. (Red wolves are easily confused with coyotes.) And learn as much as you can about the role of predators in an ecosystem so that you understand why we need them so much.

(Pausing to listen. Red wolves have ears that rotate independently in order to hear sounds from 6 to 10 miles away, depending on wind and terrain. Practically a superpower…and adorable all at the same time! )
I want this young wolf to have a future, and I hope you do too.
